“3Rs” (Reduce – Reuse – Recycle) song by Jack Johnson
This fun, energetic song provides a good introduction to the topic of environmental awareness. There are many 3Rs videos on YouTube, but they change frequently. This song can also be downloaded on popular music downloading sites. The song lyrics, which can be edited to make a cloze exercise, for example, are found below.

United Nations Environment Program: Environment for Development
These web videos can be used by English teachers in thematic units about environmental protection. They can be used in different educational settings and for a number of instructional purposes, including (a) synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and report writing for writing classes; (b) discussions, debates, and oral presentations for speaking classes; (c) strategy training and various listening activities for listening and speaking classes. Because the videos vary in so many interesting ways, they invite teachers to use and adapt them befitting their own context, situation, and learner needs. Some of the videos are available in other languages, including Arabic and French.
Blue Gold: World Water Wars
This documentary explains a variety of water crisis issues, including (a) how the Earth's fresh water supply is being wasted and becoming polluted, (b) how agriculture, housing, and industry have increased the demands for fresh water well beyond the finite supply, resulting in the desertification of the earth, (c) how companies claim the rights to water supplies in order to make a profit, and (d) how governments use water for economic and political gain. These scenarios reflect the reasons that some citizens around the world are already fighting for their basic right to water. Is this film right for your class? View the trailer.
